AI Coding Agent Config Kit

Instruction-file templates for 12 stacks and 12 prompts that write and audit them.

Coding agents work better when your project tells them how to run it, how the code is organized and what not to touch. This kit gives you ready-to-edit instruction files for twelve kinds of project, plus the scoped files for Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, and twelve prompts that make an agent draft, audit, trim and verify your own files. Each template is a starting point to adapt, written with AI assistance and checked against the tools' documentation on 2026-10-16.

What's included

  • 34-page PDF (instant download, printable; every template is plain text to copy)
  • Drop-in ZIP of 54 files: every AGENTS.md template in its own folder, CLAUDE.md and .claude/rules, 8 Cursor .mdc rules, the Copilot files and all 12 prompts as Markdown, so you copy files instead of text
  • Which file do you need? A comparison of AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .claude/rules, Cursor rules and Copilot instructions, who reads each, and the one-line bridge that keeps them in sync
  • Anatomy of a good file: a skeleton plus eight rules for writing lines agents follow, each with a weak and a better example
  • 12 stack templates: Next.js, React + Vite, Node API, Python, FastAPI, Django, Go, Rust, Unity, Godot, monorepo (root and nested files) and a docs site
  • Scoped rules: 3 Claude Code files (.claude/rules and CLAUDE.local.md), 8 Cursor .mdc rules covering all four rule types, and 3 Copilot instruction files
  • 12 prompts: draft a file from your repo, audit and trim it, find contradictions, turn review comments into rules, migrate .cursorrules, test it with probe tasks, add safety boundaries, split for a monorepo, verify commands and review quarterly
  • Checklist, troubleshooting table and quick reference of all 35 items, with links to each tool's official docs

Next.js (App Router) + TypeScript

When to use: A Next.js app using the app/ directory.

# AGENTS.md

## Project
[PROJECT NAME]: [ONE LINE]. Next.js (App Router) + TypeScript. Package manager: [pnpm / npm / yarn]. Node [VERSION].

## Commands (run from the repo root)
- Install: `[pnpm install]`
- Dev server: `[pnpm dev]` (http://localhost:3000)
- Type-check: `[pnpm tsc --noEmit]`
- Lint: `[pnpm lint]`
- Tests: `[pnpm test]`; one file: `[pnpm test path/to/file.test.ts]`
- Production build: `[pnpm build]`
A task is not done until type-check, lint and the tests for the files you touched pass.

## Layout
- `app/` routes, layouts and route handlers. `components/` shared UI. `lib/` non-UI logic.
- Tests sit beside the file as `name.test.ts(x)`.

## Conventions
- Server Components by default. Add `"use client"` only for state, effects or browser APIs, and push it to the smallest leaf component.
- Fetch data in Server Components or route handlers, not in `useEffect`.
- TypeScript strict. No `any` (use `unknown` and narrow). No `!` non-null assertions without a comment saying why.
- Validate every external input (request body, search params, env vars) with [zod / YOUR VALIDATOR] at the boundary.
- Named exports for components. Next's special files (`page.tsx`, `layout.tsx`) keep their default exports.
- Styling: [Tailwind / CSS modules]. No inline styles.

## Boundaries
- Ask before adding a dependency or changing `[next.config.js]`, CI workflows or the database schema.
- Never edit `.next/`, lockfiles by hand, or generated files in `[generated/]`.
- Never read, print or commit `.env*`. Variable names live in `.env.example`.

## Git
- Small commits, imperative subject under 72 characters. Don't push or open PRs unless asked.

Draft AGENTS.md from the repo

When to use: You have no instruction file yet and want an agent to propose one.

You are setting up an AGENTS.md for this repository. Do not write the file yet.

Step 1: Explore. Read the README, dependency manifests, CI config, lint, format and test config, and the top two levels of the directory tree.
Step 2: List the commands you found for: install, run, build, test all, test one file, lint, format, type-check. For each, say where you found it. If you cannot find one, write "not found". Do not guess commands.
Step 3: List conventions that are visible in the code and differ from the defaults of [LANGUAGE / FRAMEWORK]. Give one file path as evidence for each.
Step 4: List hazards: generated files, secrets, migrations, vendored code, slow or destructive commands.
Step 5: Ask me up to 5 questions you cannot answer from the repository.

Stop and wait for my answers. After that, draft AGENTS.md under [120] lines with these sections: Project, Commands, Layout, Conventions, Boundaries, Git. Leave out anything a developer would learn by reading the code or that [TOOL] already knows.

Who it's for

Developers, students and hobbyists who use an AI coding agent such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or Codex, and want it to follow project rules without re-explaining them every session.

Format and honest notes

PDF plus a ZIP of the same templates as files. Templates are starting points and contain [BRACKETS] to replace; check every command against your own project. Instruction files are guidance, not enforcement: an agent can still ignore a line. File formats were checked against each tool's documentation on 2026-10-16 and these tools change quickly. Not affiliated with Anthropic, Cursor, GitHub, Microsoft or OpenAI.

Questions

Which tools does it work with?

Any coding agent that reads these files: Claude Code (CLAUDE.md and .claude/rules), Cursor (AGENTS.md and .cursor/rules), GitHub Copilot (copilot-instructions.md and path files), plus Codex, Zed, Warp and others that read AGENTS.md. The PDF lists who reads what and links to each tool's docs.

Are these files tested on real projects?

They are templates, not files taken from your codebase. They were written with AI assistance, the file formats were checked against each tool's official documentation, and every command is a common default in brackets that you must check against your own project. The PDF includes a prompt that makes your agent verify each command.

Why pay when there are free rule collections?

Free collections exist and some are good. This kit is organized for use: one comparison of the formats, templates that follow the same structure, scoped rules for each tool and the prompts that keep your files short and accurate. Our free AGENTS.md generator on this site also builds a starting file at no cost.

What do I get after paying?

A PDF download link appears right after checkout on Gumroad, and Gumroad also emails you a receipt with the link. Lost it? Product pages on Gumroad have an "already bought this?" option.

Is there a discount?

Yes. Use code LAUNCH20 at checkout for 20% off any of the three single packs. The bundle is $24 instead of $30 when bought separately.

What if something is wrong with my file?

Reply to your Gumroad receipt email or message us through the Gumroad product page and we will sort it out.
