Engineer Review-Season Prompt Pack

36 prompts that turn your commits, PRs and tickets into a brag doc, a self-review and next year's goals.

Review season is easier when you can show what you did. This pack starts with evidence (your commits, merged pull requests, tickets and kudos, with the commands to pull them) and walks through impact statements, a brag document, a self-review, a promotion case, peer and manager conversations and next year's goals. Every prompt tells the AI to work only from what you paste, to ask for missing numbers instead of guessing, and to flag claims you cannot back up. Written with AI assistance and edited.

What's included

  • 25-page PDF (instant download, printable)
  • The career brief: a reusable context block with the honesty rules (evidence only, never invent a number, flag unsupported claims)
  • Collect your evidence (6 prompts): a redaction helper, commits to themes, merged PRs to a project list, tickets to outcomes, kudos mining and a forgotten-work finder, with the commands that produce the input
  • Turn work into impact (6): impact statements, an interview for missing numbers, honest estimates, making invisible work visible, a claim audit and a plain-English translation
  • Your brag doc (4): build it, find the three themes, capture what you learned and keep it updated in ten minutes a month
  • Write the self-review (6): answers to your form's real questions, three lengths, a tone check, strengths and growth areas, values mapping and a skeptical-reviewer critique
  • Build a promotion case (5): level gap analysis, one-page summary, scope narrative, evidence audit and a sponsor brief
  • Peers and your manager (5): asking for and writing peer feedback, a manager pre-read, rating-conversation questions and a measured reply to a result you disagree with
  • Next year (4): goals from themes, a goal check, a 12-week learning plan and a quarterly check-in with resume bullets
  • Quick reference, checklist and troubleshooting for all 36 prompts

Review-season pack #7

Task to impact statement

When to use: A line in your list says what you did but not why it mattered.

Rewrite each item below as an impact statement with this shape: what I did, for whom, and what changed because of it.

Items:
[PASTE 3 TO 6 ITEMS]

For each item:
- If I have supplied the "what changed", use it.
- If I have not, write the statement with a clearly marked gap like [RESULT: ask me] and add a question I should answer.
- Never write a number, percentage, time saving or dollar figure that I did not give you.
Return a table: original | rewritten | gap or question.
Review-season pack #19

Tone check: too modest or too bold

When to use: You are not sure whether you sound like you are underselling or overselling.

Review my self-review text below for tone. Tell me where I:
1. Undersell (hedging, "just", "helped with", passive voice, crediting everyone but me).
2. Oversell (claims bigger than the evidence, "led" when I contributed, vague superlatives).
3. Use filler or jargon.
For each issue quote the phrase, explain it, and suggest a plainer replacement that stays within the evidence. Do not change facts.

Who it's for

Software engineers and adjacent technical roles heading into a review or promotion cycle, who want a clear record of their work and a fair, evidence-based self-review. Works for individual contributors at any level; managers can use the peer-feedback and goal prompts.

Format and honest notes

PDF. Written with AI assistance and edited. Prompts are templates with [BRACKETS] to fill in, and examples are illustrative. It is a writing and organising aid, not career, HR or legal advice, and it cannot promise a rating, raise or promotion. AI tools can be wrong, so check every fact and number, remove confidential and personal data before pasting, and follow your employer's policy on AI tools. The brag-document idea comes from Julia Evans's post at jvns.ca; this pack is independent of her and of any employer.

Questions

Will the AI make up metrics?

It can, which is why every prompt says to work only from the evidence you paste, to write a visible gap such as [RESULT: ask me] instead of guessing, and to label estimates as estimates. Prompt 08 interviews you for real numbers and prompts 11 and 26 audit each claim against your evidence. You still need to check the final text.

Is it safe to paste work material into an AI tool?

Only if your employer allows it and you remove sensitive details first. Prompt 01 helps you redact names and project codenames, and the pack tells you not to paste source code, credentials, personal data, HR documents or other people's reviews. When in doubt, summarise in your own words.

Does it work with my company's review process?

It is process-agnostic. You paste your own form questions, ladder or values into prompts 17, 21 and 23, and the prompts work from those. Check your company's rules and ask your manager about format and timing.

Which AI tools does it work with?

Any modern chat assistant that lets you paste a long message. The prompts are plain text.

What do I get after paying?

A PDF download link appears right after checkout on Gumroad, and Gumroad also emails you a receipt with the link. Lost it? Product pages on Gumroad have an "already bought this?" option.

Is there a discount?

Yes. Use code LAUNCH20 at checkout for 20% off any of the three single packs. The bundle is $24 instead of $30 when bought separately.

What if something is wrong with my file?

Reply to your Gumroad receipt email or message us through the Gumroad product page and we will sort it out.
