How to Use AI on a Developer Resume Without Lying

Published 2026-10-16 · 2 min read · by AgentKit Co

An AI assistant can make a developer resume clearer in an afternoon. It can also quietly add a skill you do not have, a result you never measured, or a job title you never held. Recruiters and interviewers check. Here is a way to use AI that keeps every line true.

Keep a master document of true material

Start with one private document that lists everything real: jobs, projects, what you personally built, links, and any results you can actually point to (users, test coverage, speed measured on your machine, issues closed). Tailor from this document and never add to it from the AI's suggestions.

Turn projects into bullets

Give the AI the facts and ask for bullet options. The pattern "did X, using Y, resulting in Z" works when you have a real Z. When you do not, end with what the project shows instead, such as "deployed publicly with CI".

Turn this project into 3 resume bullet options. Use the pattern "did X, using Y, resulting in Z".
Project details: [WHAT IT IS, STACK, WHAT I PERSONALLY BUILT, LINKS, ANY REAL RESULTS: users, speed, tests, stars]

Rules: use only what I wrote. Where there is no result, end with what the project shows (for example "deployed publicly with CI") instead of inventing a number. Give a one-line note on which bullet is most honest and specific.

Critique it like a busy recruiter

Ask the AI to act as a recruiter who has thirty seconds. The useful output is not a rewrite but a list of what is unclear: the role you want, vague bullets, missing evidence.

Act as a busy technical recruiter with 30 seconds per resume for a [ROLE] opening. Here is my resume:
[PASTE]

Tell me: what you took away in the first 10 seconds, what is unclear, which bullets are vague or unbelievable, what is missing for this role, and the first three things you would change. Be direct and kind. Do not rewrite yet.

Tailor by reordering, not by inventing

When you tailor for a posting, limit the AI to reordering, choosing bullets, using the posting's wording only where it truly means the same thing you did, and tightening phrasing. If a posting asks for Kubernetes and you have never used it, the honest options are to build a small project, to describe adjacent experience accurately, or to skip that role for now.

Check before you send

  • Can you discuss every line for ten minutes?
  • Does every project have a link and a README that explains it?
  • Did the AI add any tool, number or title that is not in your master document? Delete it.
  • Did you remove private employer details and personal data before pasting anything into an AI tool?

Practise, don't cheat

AI is useful for practising interviews: hints on coding problems, follow-up questions on your own projects, a debrief afterwards. Do not use it to answer live interview or assessment questions unless the employer explicitly allows it.

More prompts

The Developer Job Search Prompt Pack (28 prompts, 19-page PDF) covers decoding postings, resumes and portfolios, outreach, interview stories, technical practice and offers. It was written with AI assistance and edited, and it is not career, legal or financial advice. The two prompts above are free to use, and the free prompt library has more.
